Camping across the UK — a region by region guide

The United Kingdom offers one of the most diverse camping landscapes in Europe. Within a few hours' drive of most population centres you can find dramatic mountain scenery, secluded beaches, ancient forests and open moorland — each with its own character and its own network of campsites.

Camping in England

England's national parks are the backbone of UK camping. The Lake District remains the most popular, offering lakeside pitches, fell walking and a huge range of accommodation from basic tent fields to luxury lodges. Cornwall consistently tops family camping polls thanks to its beaches, whilst the Peak District and Yorkshire Dales attract hikers and cyclists year-round.

Camping in Scotland

Scotland offers the most dramatic backdrops of any camping destination in the UK. The Highlands, Loch Lomond and the Isle of Skye attract visitors from across the world. Under Scottish land access law, responsible wild camping is permitted across most of the country, though serviced sites with facilities are plentiful through Pitch It.

Camping in Wales

Wales punches above its weight for camping. Snowdonia's dark sky reserve is one of the best places in Britain to stargaze. Pembrokeshire's coastal path is lined with small, independent sites. The Brecon Beacons offer solitude and some of the most dramatic waterfall walks in the country.

When to visit

Peak season runs from July to August when school holidays bring families to the most popular sites. May, June and September offer the best combination of reasonable weather, lower prices and availability. Many sites open year-round for those willing to embrace the elements.
